Encinitas experienced yet another consecutive year for rising rates of the most commonly reported sexually transmitted diseases.
Part of San Diego County, the Encinitas area is seeing its highest levels of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis these last two decades. Preventing STIs is high on the county’s priority list.
Infectious syphilis rates rose over 15 percent between 2016 and 2017. Early syphilis is being discovered at a higher rate in men than in women in the San Diego area, with 85.5 percent of those cases coming from gay or bisexual men. The county news center recommends the following way to prevent STDs: talk openly about STIs with all of your sexual partners and your medical professional, get tested regularly, reduce your number of sexual partners, and use condoms and barrier methods.
The instances of chlamydia are 1.6 times higher in women than in men of this area, with most cases being women between 20 and 24. The total rate of chlamydia diagnoses rose 10 percent—a reported 628.5 cases per every 100,000 people. Gonorrhea is ramping up as well, reporting a whopping 57.6 percent increase from 2015 to 2017.Â

The Gonorrhea rate in San Diego County reached a five-year high in 2015. There were 3,698 cases reported at a rate of 112.9 per 100,000 population. This was the highest rate since 2011, and the rate increased by 63% from 2011 to 2015. California had a total of 54,255 cases and a rate of 138.9 per 100,000 population.
Syphilis rates throughout California have been on the rise since 2011. In fact, California’s statewide rate increased by 92% over the period. San Diego County had 494 cases and a rate of 15.1 per 100,000 population in 2015. This was the highest rate since 2011, and it increased by 62% from 2011 to 2015. California had a rate of 12.5 per 100,000 population in 2015.
In 2014, 480 newly diagnosed HIV cases were reported in San Diego County. The rate in that year was 14.9 per 100,000 population. The cases in the county represented 9.6% of the state’s total cases. The San Diego County rate was similar to the statewide rate of 15.0 per 100,000 population.
