There was a decline in the number of HIV infections in San Diego County, home to Pendleton area, a Marine Corps Base Camp. A reduction of the infections was noted when the cases reached a low of 413 at a rate of 12.4 in 2017 from the previous high of 485 at a rate of 15.1 per 100,000 persons previously reported in 2013.
Chlamydia infections remained the most chronic STI in the county. The number was not only incredibly high but still soared from 16,114 at a rate of 502.3 in 2013 to reach a peak of 20,810 infections reported at a rate of 626.8 in 2017
Gonorrhea infections were moderately high with 2,871 infections at a rate of 89.5 reported in 2013, which increased to 5,951 infections at a rate of 179.2 in 2017.
An escalation of Syphilis infections was also noted over the 5 year period. The infections rose swiftly to hit a high of 1,133 infections in 2017 from the low figure of 596 at a rate of 18.6 reported in 2017
The San Diego County Department of Health has reacted to the increase of the HIV/STDs infections by setting up a Technical Assistance Project whose focus is to dispense community development expertise to CBOs in order for them to efficiently deliver HIV prevention and care programs to the community.
