What are the STI test options in Philadelphia,PA?

Reported cases in 2016 for Philadelphia for the three most common STDs were: 1.59 million cases of chlamydia, 468,514 cases of gonorrhea, and 27,814 cases of syphilis. These numbers come out to: 497 per 100,000 residents for chlamydia, 146 per 100,000 residents for gonorrhea, and 9 per 100,000 residents for syphilis.

Since 2016, the rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia have been declining.

With regular testing and preventative measures, the rates of all STDs should continue on a downward trend in this historic city.

Philadelphia has many testing locations: the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium has locations throughout the city, AcessMatters is located on Market Street, and the Youth Health Empowerment Project is situated on Locust Street. New initiatives are also popping up, like Take Control Philly, a group that offers free condoms shipped discreetly and directly to you.

Some of these locations also provide free STD testing. You will need to bring proof of income and make an appointment in advance.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Philadelphia, PA?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Philadelphia, PA?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.ย

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Whether you are imitating Rocky and jogging up the museum steps or touring Independence Hall it is still important to get tested regularly for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, C, Herpes, Syphilis, and HIV at one of the STD clinics in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently the city of โ€œBrotherly Loveโ€ is experiencing a rise in the number of sexually transmitted diseases reported and a lack of free STD testing centers in Philadelphia, PA has many residents looking for a way to avoid the long lines at the clinics. Now you can schedule private STD testing with one easy phone call and only spend 15 to 20 minutes taking care of your sexual health at a local lab.

Additional STD Test Statistics in Philadelphia, PA

Residents of Philly might not know that their chances for contracting a sexually transmitted disease is greater thanย  those that live in other U.S. cities. Over the past 20 years STDs have steadily increased in the city and Philadelphia has the dubious distinction of ranking 4th in the nation for the highest number of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Syphilis infections in 2014.

While these statistics also show a decrease in new HIV/AIDS cases, other city leaders state that the rise in STDs indicates that there is still a problem in Philadelphia. From 2003 to 2014 the number of Syphilis cases increased from an estimated 600 up to 900, and the alarming increase in a STD that many health officials believed to be under control only shows that the risk is still incredibly high in the city.

Even though the statistics do show that new HIV diagnoses are slowly declining the deadly disease still affects more Caucasian men than any other group. Young adults and teens are also at risk for contracting an STD, and statistics released in 2014 show that not enough Philadelphians are getting tested regularly.

  • In 2014 there were 1,918 new cases of Chlamydia in Philadelphia, though Gonorrhea diagnoses were slightly improved at only 357.
  • There were 22 new cases of Syphilis in 2014, and this does not include those who are still dealing with the disease.
  • The majority of residents diagnosed or living with HIV/AIDS are men age 45 and older.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia implemented a sexual education program in its public school system to help slow the spread of STDs. Recognizing that students are sexually active at a younger age, school officials have been working closely with city health officialss.

With 63.5 percent of the cityโ€™s teens admitting to being sexually active in 2012, school health officials realized the need for information, especially regarding how important being tested is. Unfortunately even though some aspects of the sexual education programs seem to be slowing the number of teenage pregnancy, and even the spread of some sexual diseases, there is still a problem with high STD rates.

City health officials state that it is also the parentsโ€™ responsibility to teach students, and it is also up to them to ensure their teens are tested regularly. Without the help and cooperation of parents the STD rates will continue to rise.

It is also important to remember that STDs are not only spread through sexual contact. Herpes testing in Philadelphia is especially important for high school students who frequently pass the virus through casual contact.

HIV testing in Philadelphia is also important since many of the symptoms do not appear until it has progressed to full blown AIDS. The simple test can literally save your life and that of someone you love.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Philadelphia, PA

Demographics have always played a role in STD statistics, and this is certainly true in Philadelphia. Race, gender, and income play the largest role in the STD rate, along with age. The majority of sexually transmitted diseases do occur in teens and young adults, but older men are also at a high risk of contracting the AIDS virus. This is generally due to the perceived stereotype that HIV only happens to members of the Gay and Lesbian community, which discourages many residents from feeling comfortable getting tested regularly.

Lower income neighborhoods often have plenty of clinics, but staff shortages and an inability to pay for the tests has many residents simply hoping for the best. These neighborhoods often have a higher rate of STDs due to residents commonly having multiple partners, which leads to the rapid spread of the sexually transmitted diseases.

Other factors affecting the STD rate in Philadelphia include teens unwillingness to discuss their sexual activity. With more high school students choosing to become sexually active at a younger age, the risk of contracting a STD rises significantly.
