The state came second in the nation for its high reported rate of Syphilis as of September 2017, and Clark County alone is ranked in the top 20 U.S. counties for high rates of sexually transmitted diseases. In Nevada, approximately 19,500 STD cases were reported to the state just two years ago, and officials predict that the numbers grow by the thousands each year.
The number of reported STDs aren’t slowing down; in fact, they’re growing more rapidly as time goes on, especially for cases of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and primary and secondary Syphilis. These cases have been on the rise since 2012, rising more than as 293% in some cases in Las Vegas and Clark County.
The number of STD cases is especially high in adults between the ages of 20 and 29, but everyone that is sexually active should be tested.
The Southern Nevada Health District recommends that if you have one sexual partner, you should be tested once a year. If you have multiple partners, you should be screened every three to six months. The CDC recommends that all sexually active individuals should be tested for STDs at least once in their life.
There are many private and public testing centers available in Las Vegas, including Planned Parenthood on Charleston Boulevard and one on Flamingo Road. Currently, the health board in Nevada offers a number of resources for people to obtain STD Testing but its education efforts have been the focus of recent and widespread criticism. When the new protocols for sex education in Clark County were released in early 2015, it was widely criticized for its abstinence-only approach.
