What are the STI test options in Atlanta,GA?

In regards to Syphilis, Atlanta alone has an infection rate of over twice the national average. The state of Georgia is ranked second in the nation for Syphilis, and Fulton County has the highest rate of infection per 100K people than any other county in the state.

The state is ranked seventh for Gonorrhea infections, and approximately 115 people per 100K in the Atlanta area are infected, which is just slightly under the national average of almost 124 people. Fulton County is more than double the national average at 225 people, according to the Health Department.

Chlamydia ranks highly, as well, with the state ranked sixth in the nation for the highest infection rates.

In Atlanta, there are approximately 340 cases of Chlamydia per 100K people, which is below the national average of 478 per 100K people. However, Fulton County is above the national average at more than 500 infected persons per 100K people.

Perhaps the most alarming findings from research done by the CDC concerns HIV. According to studies done in 2016, 1 in 51 Georgians will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. Obviously, this study is a bit dated, and the numbers, unfortunately, have only risen.

Additionally, Dr. Carlos Del Rio from the Emory University Center for AIDS Research has stated that the rate of HIV infections in downtown Atlanta alone is as bad as third-world countries, including Harare, Zimbabwe, and Durban.

There are many private and public testing centers available in Atlanta, including Planned Parenthood on Moreland Avenue and other public testing centers, as well as several private options, including locations on Peachtree Street, Roswell Road, and more.

Some clinics even provide free STD testing during AIDS Awareness Month in April and for those that qualify financially throughout the year. Not all tests are available without charge and times do vary, which might not always fit your schedule or current needs.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Atlanta, GA?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Atlanta, GA?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.ย

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Atlanta, GA

Georgia has required sex education to be taught in schools since 1988 but the law allows for schools to teach prevention as well as abstinence-only lessons, making it difficult for many parents to know exactly what their kids are being taught until their children enter the class.

Styles and curriculum vary widely from one district to another as well from one school to another, which further muddies the waters. As a result, many school age children donโ€™t receive comprehensive sexual education and the climbing rates of STD infection in the city reflect that fact.

The haphazard approach to educating young people is part of the reason why so many donโ€™t bother with HIV testing in Atlanta, GA as well as testing for more common STDs such as Herpes. Herpes testing in Atlanta, Georgia is readily available but still, too few people pursue it, believing the condition is harmless.

Overall, the sexual health for residents of Atlanta, GA is hampered by a number of issues. First there is the problem with sexual education for minors and young adults. With no firm framework in place, some kids are taught abstinence only while others receive more comprehensive education. This approach sends mixed messages from an early age.

The second issue affecting the overall health for people in the city is a lack of outreach, resulting in more young people being affected by STD transmission. Young women, in particular, account for more cases of many STDs than young men in the same age range. This is illustrated well by comparing transmission rates for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia among young men and women.

STD-AtlantaGA-BarChart

Finally, there is the issue of accessibility to STD testing in Atlanta, Georgia. Many large cities have a hard time providing enough access to STD testing and in this regard, Atlanta is no different.

The Atlanta Department of Health does provide outreach, education and testing help for local residents. Recently, they launched an annual event aimed at educating people about STD transmission, treatment and testing. The month long event takes place in April and is called, fittingly enough, STD Awareness Month.

But even with this newest approach to education, more still needs to be done to encourage people to be tested. Some Atlanta residents donโ€™t realize itโ€™s possible โ€“ and easy โ€“ to get a safe, secure and confidential STD test locally.

The local government offers a number of free and low cost STD clinic options for testing and treatment, but these are often crowded and take people on a walk-in basis. This approach does make it easier for people to access help, but it also makes it more difficult for people to schedule it into their day.

Better Sexual Health in Atlanta, GA

Obtaining an STD test is the easiest way to get a clear picture on your sexual health. Not only can it tell you if youโ€™ve already been infected with an STD, it gives you the chance to speak one on one with a professional healthcare adviser. Sitting with a health care provider lets you ask questions about sexual protection as well as your level of risk when it comes to STD exposure.

Confidential STD testing is, in many ways, preferred over the public health offerings Atlanta offers. While these free STD clinics are a valuable resource, private and confidential STD testing makes it easier for people to sit down and review their current status and ways to prevent infections in the future.
