According to statistics from 2016, Louisiana is the second highest state in four major sexually transmitted diseases, including Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, and, perhaps most alarming, HIV.
Some infectious disease doctors say that between 20 and 25% of people in the state who have HIV donโt know that they have it, which is part of the reason itโs so important to get tested.
New Orleans alone also rates highly for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis, and as of 2015 had an alarming 6,600 cases of HIV inside the city.
It is actually easy to find a testing centerย throughout New Orleans. There are public options available, including Planned Parenthood on Claiborne Avenue, and many private testing centers available, as well, including on Esplanade Avenue, Caton Street, and more. You can even inquire if the clinic has free STD testing for residents, though since i.d. is necessary everyone might know the reason for your visit.ย ย
One important thing to remember is that parking will be limited at many testing locations. This doesn’t have to interfere with your visit. All you have to do is take advantage of the city’s extensive public transportation system, which even includes horse drawn carriages.
If youโre anxious to be tested for STDs, remember that you are not alone, especially in New Orleans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.
SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.
The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย
At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย
If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

Some people living outside New Orleans might be surprised to learn that the โBig Easyโ does not have sex ed programs in its schools. While the city might be relaxed about drinking, sexual preferences, and almost anything else, it does not support teaching students about the dangers and risks associated with engaging in unprotected sex.
For some city leaders this simply does not make sense, especially considering the growing number of 15 to 19 year olds who are testing positive for sexually transmitted diseases. While others point out that the schools do push for students to sign abstinence contracts the number of teen pregnancies seems to indicate that this approach might not be effective.
Additional problems include lack of funding for the public schools, along with the large number of residents who send their children to Catholic schools. While city leaders are not asking church officials to start handing out condoms, they are hopeful that some will be available to help counsel students who admit to being sexually active.
Along with preventing teen pregnancies, sexual education programs can help stress the importance of regular testing. Some STDs can be spread without engaging in intercourse, and others may not show any symptoms until you have already infected others so it’s important to have regular HIV testing in New Orleans.
Regular Herpes testing in New Orleans is something else you need to follow.
Demographics and STD rates are connected, and New Orleans is no different. The city has always had a diverse population, and it is even more so as new and old residents move in after rebuilding from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Lower income neighborhoods in New Orleans have always had the highest rate of STDs, along with African American residents. Partly due to a lack of health care centers in the wards, especially in the lower sections. It can also be difficult for lower income families to afford testing, and most health care plans do not cover regular visits to the clinic.
Religion and cultural beliefs are also responsible for the high rate of STDs, and the large Catholic population often frowns on parishioners who are seen being tested regularly.ย This has also led many in New Orleans to believe that only certain people are at risk of contracting an STD, and this misconception needs to be changed.
There are clinics in the city but many residents, but not enough. Now you can easily schedule confidential STD testing with a phone call, and only spend 20 minutes at the local lab. This gives you the privacy you need, and you will still have plenty of time to catch a ride on the trolley for a tour of the Garden District.
