Reno is struggling with rising HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis rates. Currently, HIV cases are at a rate of 230.8 cases per 100,000 people. There were 2,200 cases of Chlamydia in the city in 2016.
Reno also reported 598 cases of Gonorrhea and 33 cases of Syphilis.
The city does have STD testing centers for its citizens, including Planned Parenthood on 5th Street. The expansive building is easy to find, and you’ll love the option of being able to park close to the front door. They are open after 5 p.m. which is a bonus if you are work typical hours during the day.
Some private options are available as well, including on 5th Street and other locations. Most private centers do have parking available for their clients but you might want to ask as you are scheduling a visit.
Remember that public testing options offer pricing based on a sliding pay scale which may or may not be cheaper for you, and private testing may offer more privacy. The first thing to remember is that this is a relatively small city, even though it doesn’t see itself that way. Its size and population affect how many public clinics are nearby.
There are some, but not as many as you might think given its dismal sexual health rating.
You will probably find the lines daunting, but there’s a good reason Northern Nevada HOPES is always packed. It is the only place to go in town if you want a rapid HIV oral or STI blood test. There are 2 others, but you’ll want to pack for an overnight drive. Their standard business hours can also be inconvenient, and it’s almost impossible to reach a professional at the clinic by phone. Your best bet is to plan to spend the day if rapid results are absolutely necessary.
Washoe County Health District wants to do its part. Situated downtown, it’s in the perfect location to serve those most in need. Hours are constantly changing and appointments must be made. However, if you can show proof of income the cost will be based on that. Testing is available for all communicable infections, including vaccinations against HPV.
At the 5th Street health center, Planned Parenthood has setup shop. Their services cover all aspects of women and men’s reproductive health. Chances are you will need a prior appointment, and using insurance is never a guarantee.
With only a few dozen or less public testing centers, taking advantage of a private clinic/lab is making sense to anyone that wants to improve their and the city’s health.
AIDS and its precursor HIV aren’t main conversation points, and this is reflected by the few facilities that deal with the autoimmune virus.
Northern Nevada HOPES (NNH) solely offers rapid testing, but Planned Parenthood and centers under the county’s umbrella also have oral and blood tests. NNH also sponsors HIV fact based classes, one of the few to do so.
Why there isn’t more being done isn’t clear. What is apparent is that Reno seems to want to ignore the threat of HIV and let it remain a “big city” problem.
You’re not out of luck if you want to get STI testing, there are some privately run options. Discretion at these labs is always key, and almost anyone can afford to pay the minimal fee. Insurance companies rarely have trouble processing your claim, and the hours are generally based on patients’ schedules.
Education is getting an uphaul, thanks to years of lobbying, debating and amending a new bill. While not everything wasn’t included, there’s enough being taught that students should be able to make safe and responsible choices on their own. Even though it’s not perfect, it is a vast improvement over the previous curriculum.
What will be taught is the effectiveness of birth control and condoms. Where to go to get them, and most importantly STD facts. How and when to say “no” and the legal age of consent will also be covered in an effort to reduce sexual violence.

With schools poised to educate students and clinics open to the public, Reno is hopeful that this is a set towards finally seeing a decrease in residents and visitors testing positive for STIs.
You don’t have to gamble with your health, even if you think the odds are in your favor. Remaining monogamous or even celibate isn’t enough, you also need to get screened for sexually transmitted diseases.
