Baton Rouge leads the nation in diagnosed cases of HIV and AIDS, and itโs estimated that 900 to 1,000 more people are living with the disease but arenโt diagnosed. The HIV rate in Baton Rouge is a startling 40.5 cases per 100,000 people.
Chlamydia has a rate of 649.4 cases per 100,000 people, while Gonorrhea has a rate of 232.1 cases per 100,000 people. Syphilis also affects the area, though at a lower rate of 18 cases per 100,000 people.
Baton Rouge has some public STD testing centers for its citizens, including Planned Parenthood on Government Street. Many private clinics are available as well, including down Flannery Road or North Boulevard.ย
Most testing centers are easy to get to and a few offer free STD testing to residents. If you are a student at LSU, you can also get tested through the university’s health care center. Though you may not be able to remain completely anonymous since i.d. will most likely be required.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.
SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.
The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย
According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.
You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.
STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.
SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.
The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย
At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย
If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

The Baton Rouge Black Alcoholism Council is tackling the touchy topic of STDs. Why sexually transmitted diseases got out of control is a question that should be asked, but often isnโt. Often because people think that itโs not a problem. After all, who really knows someone with a STD? Unlike a cold or flu, itโs often not noticeable and unless youโre told youโll never know.
This is the stigma associated with these viruses and infections. No one wants to publicly admit having one. Theyโre afraid of the perceived social misconceptions. While most friends wonโt ostracize you, the feelings of shame often prevent you from talking about your treatable health problem.
Women have always seemed to be more susceptible to Chlamydia, but there might be an explanation. Thanks to their visits to their OB/GYN, they are often being screened if they complain about suspicious symptoms. This could be why their percentages local, state and nationally are almost always higher.
Opportunities for education are improving, but they still have a long way to go. Planned Parenthood and some other local organizations do offer classes, along with brochures and pamphlets. LSU has also joined the fight against STIs and has ensured that information is readily available to students and faculty.
Primary care opportunities are starting to improve, and this should have an affect on infectious disease rates.
Worrying about STIs isnโt productive, and it wonโt keep you from getting one. However, testing will. You donโt have to be ashamed, thanks to education the stigmas are going away. Private testing, will also allow you to remain anonymous. If your main fear is someone finding out that you might be positive for an STD, this is the route to go.
The โold southโ really is changing, even though itโs history is everywhere. Donโt be afraid to put your health first, especially if it all it means is an oral swab or a simple finger prick.
