Gonorrhea is seen more frequently in Black females than in any other group in the area, followed by Black males, White females, White males, Hispanic males and Hispanic females. Syphilis is most common in Black males, followed by White males, and thirdly, by Black females.
Those who are at or below the poverty level are at an increased risk for STD infection and for spreading it to others. This is believed to be because of a lack of education about the dangers of unsafe sex, paired with inadequate financial resources for quality healthcare and regular screening.
