Syphilis cases tripled between 2007 and 2017, reaching 8.5 cases per 100K people, with 80% of those infected residing in Providence County.
Health officials speculate that the rise in known cases could be partially due to increased and improved testing, but it’s still a worrying statistic. In 2017, the chlamydia rate in Providence County was 622.6. And in 2016, there were 294 cases of gonorrhea.
For both chlamydia and gonorrhea, there has been a spike in diagnoses of teens.
In 2015, 54 people in Providence County were diagnosed with HIV. Health officials recommend regular testing and condom use (they are concerned that condom use has decreased). Some organizations hold free STD testing events during STD Awareness Month to combat the problem.

APRI started in 1985 and was one of the first organizations in the state that focused on HIV/AIDS and the effect the virus has on people and the community.
They are primarily a testing and resource clinic that works to improve their clients access to quality and affordable care. They do have rapid testing for the 3 STDs they screen for. You only have to wait minutes, instead of days to learn your status.
AIDS Cares is one of the largest agencies in the state that is working to eradicate HIV and Hepatitis C. They are primarily staffed by volunteers, though some do have medical training or degrees.

ACOS is part of one of the largest HIV/AIDS resource and testing centers in the state. They started in 1987 and have continued to grow since then.

Remember, you live in a state with fewer square miles, and this automatically means that there will be less places to go if you want to be proactive about STDs and your health. This doesn’t mean that you’ll have to cross state lines, though there are clinics that will accept you there.
Planned Parenthood of Southern New England is all around you. One of their most convenient locations is on Point Street. They are determined to keep their doors open regardless of legislative funding, all to continue to see to your health. STD tests are part of their services, and they keep evening and weekend hours to ensure that everyone has the same opportunity to see a health professional. Fees can be waived, and insurance is accepted. You just need to let them know you’re on your way.
Providence Community Health Centers (PCHC) has a center on Candace St. Tests for Hepatitis C and other infectious diseases are available for anyone that has enrolled as a patient. Insurance is a plus, but not necessary. Their centers will see anyone that needs to be evaluated. Make sure that you go through the enrollment process if this is your first choice. There is another office on Warren Way if this is closer for you.
Syphilis may be the “new” old disease that is garnering recent attention, but HIV and AIDS haven’t gone away either. The autoimmune deficiency virus and its predecessor are starting to place Providence on a health warning map that they would rather not be a part of. To prevent this, have an HIV test every time a clinic screens you for sexually transmitted diseases.
If you didn’t do this or need an additional test, anyplace that look for STDs can probably check for the infectious virus. For those that want to double check or have placed themselves in a potentially risky environment, go down Pleasant St. you’ll see the building for the AIDS project of Rhode Island.

AIDS Care Ocean State, Broad St., has the same operating premise and services as their associates on Pleasant St. What sets them apart from others is that they have both types of HIV blood tests, rapid and conventional. If you need to know your results now, choose rapid over the other.
Miriam Hospital has a variety of health related services, and they are open to those not lucky enough to have insurance. Sometimes, it can even be free or low cost. This policy applies to both types of HIV blood tests. You don’t even have to become part of their network to access these benefits.
If you don’t mind a 10 mile or so drive through gorgeous county, Health Imperatives and Thundermist Health Center of Woonsocket aren’t that far away. Both have tests that can provide your HIV status in minutes. Sometimes it can be worth the short distance to find out if you are safe or need to start immediate treatment.
Sex education has changed for the better, and now bills are in play to introduce the concept of consensual sex. This is a huge leap forward for a town that is predominately viewed as conservative.
More than “just saying no” is being taught in schools, but students are leaving complaining that they feel like much was missing. Are contraceptives effective and only “gays” catch diseases are questions that they don’t seem to have the right answers too. When they enter into any one of the college campuses in Providence they usually become another statistic on the county’s health chart.
PPRI has helped introduce some of the new educational measures, and they are as active in the community as they have always been. Classes are open to the public, and you can find literature in every exam room. Condoms are free, and they will explain to you that they really work, you don’t have to ask.
They are not the only ones that are reaching out to the people they serve. AIDS Project RI and AIDS Care Ocean State are other social groups that are trying to serve the community. Events are held by both organizations, you can just show up, learn and participate.
The Marble House is worth a visit, and so is Roger Williams Park and Zoo. Who can’t help but smile at the red pandas playing in one of their natural habitat exhibits? The Touro Synagogue is also open for tours, it dates back to 1763. What isn’t widely toured are the STD clinics. Don’t want to mess up your schedule?
