If you’re looking for STD testing in southeast Harris County, Texas, you’re not alone, as the proximity to Houston makes this population center a high-demand area for this type of service. Harris County plays a big role in the state’s high number of STDs. This is according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and includes chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Harris County had just over 23,000 cases of chlamydia, 6500 cases of gonorrhea, and 300 cases of syphilis. Chlamydia and gonorrhea affect mostly 15 to 24 year olds but can affect any age.

Overall, we see that more chlamydia cases were reported than any other STD condition in Texas and throughout the United States. Chlamydia rates have been increasing since the 1980s. Some estimates are that prevalence among those who are ages 14 to 39 is about two percent. Harris County shows more females reporting chlamydia than males. The ages of 15 to 24 for both males and females show the greatest numbers of people with chlamydia.
In a similar trend we see more females reported with gonorrhea than males in Harris County. The ages of 15 to 24 are the ones that have the largest numbers of gonorrhea.
More males report syphilis than females in Harris county. The ages of 15 to 24 show the highest numbers. Blacks/African Americans show the highest number compared to whites and Hispanic/Latinos.
An urban area such as Harris County has a dense population so this is always a contributing factor to higher rates for STDs than a rural area.

A recent report shows that close to sixty percent of Texas public school districts used an abstinence-only sexual education curriculum. About a quarter teach no sex education at all. A recent report shows just over 1200 newly diagnosed cases of HIV for adults and adolescents aged 15 years of age and older in the county. This translates to about 29 cases per 100,000 people. There are about 22,000 reported cases of people living with HIV in the county. This mean about 520 cases per 100,000 people. The rate of infection appears to be constant. But the number of new diagnoses in young men who have sex with men is increasing.

In addition to the tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, testing for HIV, hepatitis, and HPV is important. HIV testing helps you not get the life threatening condition of AIDS. HIV treatment includes taking medicine to slow the progressions of the virus in the body.
Hepatitis testing is important so you can treat the condition before it causes permanent damage. Hepatitis B is spread mainly through sexual contact but it also is spread through infected blood as with needle sharing. You can prevent hepatitis B with immunization.
HPV testing is important so you know if you have the HPV virus that can increase your chance of cervical, vaginal, anal, and penile cancer. A vaccine prevents the HPV strains most likely to cause these genital warts and cervical cancer. The vaccine is recommended for boys and girls.
