Among the 8 counties in Western New York, Erie County has the highest number of STD infections. The most prevalent STDs in Cheektowaga are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and syphilis. HIV/AIDS and cases of primary and secondary syphilis are on the rise too. From 2014 to 2015 the number of Syphilis cases increased by 89% while Gonorrhea cases within the same time frame increased by 49%.
Erie County ranked the second in syphilis infections out of all counties in New York. From 2014-2015 there has been a resurgence of Congenital Syphilis in the County, with a rise of 27%. Men who have sex with men are the hardest hit by Syphilis.
Chlamydia cases were the highest according to a 2015 research. The rates were high among women recording 850 cases, which translated to 68.3% of the total Chlamydia infections. Men had a tally of 395 cases. The age that was hardly hit by Chlamydia infection was between the age of 15-29 years.
Gonorrhea was the second most prevalent infection in Erie County, with a total of 458 cases. Females dominated the list with 268 cases compared to men with 190 cases. Again the most sex active age between 15-29 years dominated in infection rates. According to race, the Black non hispanic had the highest infection rates followed by White non hispanic with 671 and 70 per 100, 000 respectively.
