Communities within Prince William County, including the city of Cherry Hill, has seen a significant spike in chlamydia and syphilis (primary and secondary) cases over the last three years.
Records from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that chlamydia rates in the county jumped by more than 18% as the number of newly reported cases rose from 1,894 cases in 2016 to 2,250 cases in 2018. Whereas the number of new syphilis cases nearly doubled as the number of reported cases increased from 15 in 2016 to 29 in 2018.
Fortunately, these communities did see a decline in the number of newly diagnosed gonorrhea cases. The number of new gonorrhea cases fell from 377 in 2017 to 345 in 2018.
Statistics also show that many of these new STD cases involve teenagers and young adults under the age of 26 years old.
HIV Surveillance Reports for Prince William County show a slight decline in the number of newly reported HIV cases over a four-year period, as the number of new cases dropped from 50 cases in 2015 to 43 cases in 2018.
