The Health Department of Hawaii has noted a decrease in the number of reported HIV infections over the years. The department recorded 97 new HIV cases at a rate of 78.2 per 100,000 people in the year 2015. However, the number of infections reported in 2016 lowered to 66 cases at a rate of 73 in every 100,000 people.
The number of Chlamydia infections reported in 2018 vaguely dropped to 5211 cases at a rate of 531.69 per 100,000 population from the 5389 cases at a rate of 545.09 reported in 2017. Chlamydia recorded a majority of STD cases reported over the years.
The department officials also noted a decline in the number of Gonorrhea cases reported in the year 2018 in comparison to the previous years. In 2017, 1120 cases at a rate of 113.29 per 100,000 population were reported, and the number slightly dropped to 912 cases at a rate of 93.05 in the year 2018.
There was a drastic decrease in the number of primary and secondary Syphilis infections reported in the year 2018. 83 new Syphilis cases at a rate of 8.40 for every 100,000 persons had been reported in 2017, and the number dropped to 48 cases at a rate of 4.90 per 100, 000 population in the year 2018. The number of Syphilis infections in 2018 recorded the least infections in comparison to that of other STDs in the region.
The Health Department of Hawaii has set up plans and policies to curb the spread of STDs in the region. Some of the strategies, policies, and programs the department has implemented include the distribution of free condoms, participating in research programs, opening affordable STD clinics, running mobile clinics and conducting STD awareness programs.
