Fruita, CO, is a home rule municipality within western Mesa County, a county that witnessed a fluctuating number of new HIV infections between 2015 and 2017. In 2015, no person tested positive while the following year saw four diagnoses. In 2017, the number of new cases reduced to three.
An uptick was clear in the number of new Syphilis infections recorded between 2017 and 2018. While eight diagnoses were made in 2017 at a rate of 5.3 per 100,000 population, 2018 saw 121 new infections that happened at a rate of 7.2.
Conversely, the number of new Gonorrhea infections nearly doubled from 110 cases prevailing at a rate of 72.4 in 2017 to 219 infections in 2018 that were reported at a rate of 142.6. Consequently, the county ranked 8th among those with the highest number of Gonorrhea diagnoses.
A similar upward trend was evident when comparing Chlamydia surveillance data reported within the same period. There were 627 new infections in 2017, and 640 diagnoses in 2018 reported at incidence rates of 412.8 and 416.6, respectively.
Although the county has a relatively low HIV incidence rate, public health officials have raised concern over the rising number of new STD cases. Given that individuals aged between 15 and 24 years accounted for a significant percentage of the new STD infections in 2014, more emphasis has been placed on the need for improved access to screening services and prevention education.
