The Chlamydia rate in Pierce County has steadily increased over the past 15 years and reached an all-time high in 2014. The number of cases nearly doubled over this period. In 2014, Pierce County reported 4,372 cases of Chlamydia and a rate of 532.3 per 100,000 population. The rate was much higher than the statewide rate of 376.7 per 100,000 population.
The Gonorrhea rate in Pierce County has been inconsistent in recent years with periods of high and low rates. There were 1,271 cases reported in 2014. The rate in 2014 was 154.8 per 100,000 population. The county rate increased most drastically from 2011 to 2014, reaching an all-time high in 2014. In comparison, the statewide rate was 88.1 per 100,000 population.
Similar to Gonorrhea and Chlamydia rates, the Primary & Secondary Syphilis rate reached an all-time in 2014. Pierce County reported 30 cases of Syphilis in 2014. While most STD rates in Pierce County were higher than the statewide average, the Syphilis rate was lower than the Washington rate of 4.8 per 100,000 population.

According to state law, public schools in the state of Washington must instruct students about methods to prevent exposure to and transmission of sexually transmitted diseases. Information regarding sexually transmitted diseases in the state of Washington must put “emphasis to the importance of sexual abstinence, sexual fidelity, and avoidance of substance abuse in controlling disease.”
