The Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective is a community-based organization. Connecticut law does not require public schools to teach comprehensive sexual education. This is surprising since many states in the region mandate sexual education. According to the state of Connecticut, sexual health education should be “developmentally appropriate, medically accurate and use scientifically based approaches.”
The local school district in Manchester is Manchester Public Schools. The board of education policies do not mention sexual education or STD prevention. The policies only state that the Manchester Board of Education “recognizes the importance of this instruction and will comply with the statute by offering instruction on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.”
Although Connecticut does not require sexual education, it does require HIV education. The Connecticut State Department of Education highly recommends that sexual health education be taught in public schools.
While many schools do teach sexual education, laws and resources are needed to improve sexual education in the state of Connecticut. Recommending sexual education is not good enough. More attention is needed to promote the importance of sexual education.
African Americans had the highest Chlamydia rates for both males and females. Black females between the ages of 20 and 24 years old had the highest rate for all groups at 4,109 per 100,000 population in 2014. African Americans had the highest rates among males as well. The rate for African American males between 20 and 24 years old was 1,266 per 100,000 population.
The demographic group most affected by Gonorrhea in Connecticut was African American females aged 20 to 24 years old. The rate in 2014 was 803 per 100,000 population. However, the rate among males was higher than the rate among females. Overall, African American males had the highest rate in Connecticut.
In 2014, the Connecticut Department of Public Health reported a total of 87 Syphilis cases. 80 of these cases were reported among males. That’s about 92% of the total cases. The rate for Syphilis was highest among African Americans
There were a total of 277 newly diagnosed cases of HIV reported in 2015. The rate was highest among African Americans (29.5 per 100,000 population) in 2015. Hispanics had the second highest rate. Individuals aged 20 to 29 years old showed the highest incidence. The majority of cases were reported among males in the state.
