What are the STI test options in Honolulu,HI?

Those living in Honolulu who seek out regular testing are making a smart move for their long-term health.

The county has 0.8 cases of early latent syphilis per 100,000 people compared to the stateโ€™s 0.7 cases, as well as 2.2 cases of primary and secondary syphilis compared to the stateโ€™s 1.7 cases per 100,000 people.

This impression is further strengthened by how the county has 200.7 cases of HIV.

Early detection is the key to long-term health, and regular testing is recommended at six month intervals by health professionals.

Honolulu offers many testing options for those who make their sexual health a priority. Waikiki Health has multiple locations across Honolulu. One such location can be found on Keoniana Street, and the Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family Services on North School Street also offers STD testing. From the Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii on South King Street to the Life Foundation on Ala Moana Boulevard, a quick search will help you find a public or private std testing center.

Along with testing, Hawaii is also rolling out prevention and education services through interactive websites, smartphone applications, telemedicine, and social media. Another initiative is free STD testing but only to residents that qualify.

In this way health officials hope to engage those most at risk, resulting in lowering the rates of transmission.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Honolulu, HI?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Honolulu, HI?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.ย

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Honolulu, HI

The state passed Policy 103.5 in June of 2015, which replaced the previous abstinence-based program with something more comprehensive. In brief, the new policy mandates the teaching of abstinence, contraception, and prevention methods for STDs. Furthermore, the policy mandates informing students about the sexual health resources that are available to them within their communities, which should enable them to make better choices when combined with the other priorities laid out in the text.

All of this is important because a recent survey of Hawaiiโ€™s high school students suggests that sexual health education could prove useful. For example, 22.3 percent of the people surveyed stated that they were sexually active in the sense that they had at least 1 partner within the last 3 months, but no more than 48 percent of them reported using a condom and no more than 27 percent of them reported using some kind of birth control.

Even worse, 20 percent of the people surveyed stated that they had used either drugs or alcohol before having sex, which is known to increase their chances of making a serious mistake that could affect their sexual health for the worse by impairing their judgment. Combined, these revelations could explain much about some of the trends that have been happening within the state in recent decades.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Honolulu, HI

Based on the 2010 U.S. Census, Honolulu, HI has a population with an age distribution that resembles that of their counterparts in the rest of the United States. For example, the median age was 40 for males and 43 for females, which are not that far off from the median age of 41.3 for the country as a whole. However, what is interesting is the cityโ€™s racial makeup, which consisted of 54.8 percent Asian, 17.9 percent White, 8.4 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 16.3 percent who identified as two or more races.

Regardless, it is important to note that none of these groups are safe from the threat of STDs. For example, younger demographics tend to be either less cautious, less well-informed, or both, meaning that they tend to be more at-risk from STDs because they are not making use of all the precautions that are available to them.

At the same time, older demographics should be lulled into complacency on this matter just because they are statistically less at-risk, seeing as how they can be just as prone to suffering from such problems should they fail to make use of the same precautions. This is particularly true because of the sheer number of tourists who visit Honolulu on a regular basis, which results in a fair amount of casual sex that in turn, results in a faster spread of STDs through both them and the local population.

Better Sexual Health in Honolulu, HI

Based on the evidence presented so far, it is clear that STDs remain a serious threat in the city of Honolulu, HI. However, residents should know that they can protect their sexual health so long as they are willing to put in the time and effort needed to do so. In part, this will consist of taking the appropriate precautions when they have sex. However, they should also make use of STD clinics that offer private STD testing, which will provide them with up-to-date information about their sexual health in a confidential manner, thus enabling them to make the best decisions for themselves going forward.
