The centrally located capital city of Illinois, like most large cities, has relatively high STD rates, but they’re not nearly as high as Chicago’s. But the big problem in Sangamon County isn’t the fact that they have STD rates, but rather who has them: 40% of STI cases are of teens aged 15–19.
Some of those numbers come from the University of Illinois at Springfield, but not all of them. Since sex education is often lacking in schools, health officials urge parents to talk to their children about sex—the risks, how to stay protected, etc.—no matter how hard it is to have that conversation.
In 2015, the HIV prevalence rate in Sangamon County was 175 per 100K people. That’s a little over half the Illinois rate of 330. But Sangamon County had 1,354 chlamydia cases in 2017, at a rate of 685.7. The gonorrhea and (primary and secondary) syphilis rates that year were 287.1 and 3.

Are you thinking that if there were additional clinics and labs that STDs might start to decline? You would probably be right. There are private labs that will test you anonymously at an affordable price. Quest Diagnostics is a preferred one, along with Cancer Care Specialists.
There are also public clinics, but you may need to be a member of their network. Most will let you signup, but some may require may information and money than you are willing to give. Ask the proper questions and you’ll know where to go.
LGBTQ community members tend to go to The Phoenix Center. It’s over on E. Lawrence Ave, not too far from the Dana Thomas House. Services are often free, and this includes testing for most venereal diseases. Hours are short, they close well before local happy hour starts. Fridays, they also want you to call if you need treatment or counseling.
PPIL (Planned Parenthood of Illinois) are involved in every aspect of their clients’ health. This includes the reproductive system of men and women. Testing is on a sliding scale, bring paperwork to back up your inability to pay claim. You’ll also don’t want to surprise them by just dropping in. With hundreds of clients to see daily for all types of health services, they don’t have the time for unexpected guests.
HIV and its subsequent autoimmune virus were enough to frighten people in the 1980’s to go and get checked. Once the disease was no longer in the news, testing lines drop off. What no one realized that it would come back once the pressure was gone. Now it is almost back to epidemic proportions, and Springfield still has fewer than 20 clinics ready for treatment, care and testing.
Springfield Urban League is on E. Madison Ave. Community run, they provide much needed health services for the less fortunate. Free conventional tests come with no requirements. You can also request a rapid HIV test. If you’re concerned about Hep A or B, they’ll vaccinate you against the virus.
Sangamon County Health Department, S Grant Ave., has health and social services for everyone. Testing and providing vaccinations are only a few things they offer. Anyone can go in and receive help, just ask about the fees before entering an exam room. They can be different for everyone, and you don’t want a surprise bill at the end. It can be tough enough waiting for the results, you don’t need a large cost on top of that.
Any private facility can see if you are HIV negative or positive. Sometimes its worth the phone call to remain anonymous and skip the possible wait.
In 2014, things started to change. Sexual health education slowly began to include something other than abstinence. Even though it is taking longer than some would like, it is an improvement over the past curriculum.
Since not all schools are caught up students are searching elsewhere, and surprisingly one is The Phoenix Center. Gear for those that are LGBTQ, they warmly welcome anyone that wants to know a little more. Events are held constantly to raise funds for their programs that include education on HIV and STD prevention techniques. Their website has the complete calendar for the month and into the year.
PPOI has never slacked in their efforts to bring about sexual health awareness and education. You can’t miss the literature they have scattered throughout their offices. It is free to anyone interested, and you’ll often leave their clinic with several pamphlets in tow. Read them, there is plenty of information that can help you make the right decisions in all aspects of your life.
The Springfield Urban League is working hard towards youth education and empowerment. Most classes are free or only require a minimal donation, especially if you are trying to better your life. Look on their website or stop by their office, they’ll help you get started with registration in any training or empowerment program.
You don’t have to wait for the schools to catch up to the current times. There are groups in your community that have already done this and are just waiting for you to start participating.
