Health officials are concerned with the rising STD rates in Champaign County, though they acknowledge that some of those numbers come from more and better testing, which is a good thing. More people are being tested, especially women who come in for pregnancy tests.
But also, with the AIDS scare of the โ80s and โ90s over and HIV treatments available, people have not been using protection as they should.
Health officials at the University of Illinois say there are a lot of students coming in for STI testing and treatment and, in a 2015 ranking, it was the second most sexually diseased school of the Big Ten universities (based on city STD rates), after Ohio State. But universities often have free STD testing events, so look out for them.
In 2015, the prevalence rate for HIV in Champaign County was 206 per 100K people, which was much lower than Illinoisโs rate of 330. But the bacterial STD rates were high.
In 2017, Champaign County had 1,704 chlamydia cases, at a rate of 847.4 per 100K people, and thatโs higher than Cook Countyโs rate (the Illinois rate was 588.6). The gonorrhea and (primary and secondary) syphilis rates for that year were 257.6 and 6.5.
There are a few STD-testing clinics in Champaign. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District offers confidential STD testing in two locations (check their schedule) at a low cost. They also offer the HPV vaccine.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.
STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.
SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.
The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย
At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. In 2013 state lawmakers passed a bill that seemed to call for changes in sex education. Public schools must now include medically accurate and comprehensive information on STDs and contraceptives, if they currently have or decide to offer sex education classes. Abstinence will still be encouraged, but students will also learn how to protect themselves if they are sexually active.
The new law does not require school districts to provide students with sex education, though all must include medically accurate information on HIV/AIDS.
While โabstinence onlyโ material is no longer an approved part of the curriculum, conservative groups arenโt that worried. Most state that since their material also covers the use of contraceptives their abstinence based classes fall well within the new guidelines. Even though this may be true, it is leaving a large percentage of students ill-equipped to protect themselves from STDs.
Students are often taught that condoms and other types of contraceptives are ineffective at preventing pregnancies and STDs. This has led to an estimated 60 percent of graduating high school seniors to believe that there isnโt a reason to use protect during intercourse. This misconception is being blamed for the cityโs high teen pregnancy and STD rates.
Unfortunately the majority of teens are also not learning about the importance of regular STD testing. Regular Herpes testing in Champaign could prevent the spread of the contagious virus, especially among teens. Thanks to federal law the importance of regular HIV testing in Champaign is briefly discussed, and is being credited with the countyโs lower infection rates.
The cityโs high STD rates are caused by several demographic factors. It is home to the University of Illinois, and this means that a large percentage of the population is 22 years of age or younger. Statistically adults under the age of 25 have a greater risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
This is due to several reasons. A lack of comprehensive sex education in the city, and across the nation is leaving incoming college students ill-equipped to protect themselves from STDs. Some are not aware of how important condoms are, while others mistakenly believe that prophylactics do not offer adequate protection. Not only is this putting them at risk, but everyone they come in contact with.
The lack of STI clinics is also being cited as a reason for the steady increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections reported each year. The strong conservative beliefs that are prevalent in the area has been successful at limiting the number of STD testing facilities in the city, and recent budget cuts has reduced it even further. With many community health centers being forced to close due to lack of funding, residents are finding it even harder to get tested for STDs on a regular basis.
Before heading over to one of the hip downtown bars to celebrate a Fighting Illini win when was the last time you were tested? If it’s your first time, there’s nothing to be afraid of and if you previously had a bad experience it doesn’t have to happen again. STI clinics will protect your privacy, even when it comes to getting your testing results. It is also affordable, and more dependable than mobile testing.
