The Southeast coast of Florida is known for having high STD rates. Situated in Broward County between Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach shares these problems.
In 2015, there were 18,867 people living with HIV or AIDS in Broward County, with a prevalence rate of 1,180 per 100K people. Health officials are mainly worried about all the people still out there who donโt know they are infected.
There is still a social stigma around HIV, especially directed toward gay and bisexual men, and that can make some people reluctant to come in for testing. But medical professionals are discreet and treatment is available if you do turn out to be HIV-positive.
In 2017, Broward County had 11,289 chlamydia cases, at a rate of 599 per 100K people. For comparison, Floridaโs rate was 486.8. The gonorrhea and infectious syphilis rates were 209.1 and 17.5. There were 11 cases of congenital syphilis.
There are a few STD-testing clinics in Deerfield Beach, and even more options in the surrounding area. The VA Primary Care Clinic on 10th St provides screening for HIV, and a few other STIs, to veterans. Hillsboro Urgent Care, on Natura Ave, and MD Now Urgent Care in the Deerfield Mall provide STD testing.
The Little Clinic on Federal Hwy also has STI testing and treatment available. Keep an eye out for free STD testing events during STD or AIDS awareness campaigns.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.
SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.
The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย
According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.
You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.
STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.
SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.
The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย
At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย
If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

Within the state of Florida, there has been an increase in Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. According to the CDC, cases of Chlamydia increased by more than 5,000 between 2014 and 2015. Cases of Gonorrhea increased by 3,000, and cases of Syphilis increased by 1,000. The demographic impacted the most are 15-24-year oldโs. Interestingly, there is also an increased number of senior citizens becoming infected by STIโs. ย This is due in part to the fact that the Florida is known for its large communities of retired 50+ year oldโs.
Medical experts also blame drugs like Viagra, which allows senior citizens to remain virile at an older age. Senior citizens are also less likely to be tested, which increases the likeliness the disease will progress without treatment. Within the last year the number of cases of STDs reported numbered over 700 in Broward County. In fact, there was a greater increase in Broward county, than there was in the state of Florida.
The greatest gender demographic within the state of those infected by HIV is men having sex with men (51.9% in 2015). ย The greatest ethnic demographic is African Americans (42.4% in 2015). There is significant funding available for testing for STIโs and HIV/AIDS. In 2015, approximately $50,869,426 was given for the specific purpose of monitoring, testing and treating STIโs and HIV/AIDS. The Department of Health provides STI walk in clinics through a contractual agreement with AFD (AIDS Healthcare Foundation). One of the primary locations providing STI testing is the Broward Wellness Center which is in Fort Lauderdale.

In 1981, President Reagan signed legislation that gave funding to abstinence only education within the school systems across the country. One of those programs known as Title V is still implemented in many areas of Florida, despite showing repeated failure to properly and effectively educate Floridaโs students. There have been continued efforts by members of both the educational and judicial systems within Florida to steer away from an abstinence only curriculum. In 2013 Broward County implemented its own curriculum after the state statistics showed that the area had one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS.
Students are not required to take health education to graduate. If they do take some form of health education they will not necessarily learn about HIV/AIDS or STIโs and how to prevent them. Standards for high school students say they must learn how to respect others and themselves, but they are not required to learn about STIโs or how to prevent them. In fact, across the board Florida is behind other states when it comes to including curriculum on STIโs and HIV/AIDS as well as teen pregnancy.
According to a report done by SIECUS (Sexuality Information and Education) schools in Broward County use a curriculum called WAIT Training, promote Heterosexual marriage and gender stereotypes, employ fear and shame based tactics, misinformation about HIV/AIDS, and use national abstinence only supplementary materials. Broward County has made an alternative K-12 curriculum available through their website. During high school, this curriculum discusses a variety of subjects pertaining to sexual wellness including STIโs. Included in the program are resources for both students and parents.
Also available is a course called OWL. OWL (Our Whole Lives) which is offered through the Universalist Utilitarian Church of Boca Raton. OWL promotes diversity and answers to questions asked by both parents and students. While offered by the church, OWL has no religious affiliation. ย In addition to these classes, the local Planned Parenthood in Boca Raton offers free condoms to those needing them. This would be a 19-minute drive from Deerfield Beach.
There are a few locations in the surrounding areas at which individuals could be tested for HIV/AIDS and STIโs. One is the Paul Hughes center in Pompano Beach, and another is the Broward Family and Health Center which is also located in Pompano Beach.
As of 2014 the number of black females infected with HIV in the local area was 15.4 times greater than that of white females. Black males are 1.6 times more infected than white males. 68% of male infections is a result of male to male interaction, while 80% of women are infected from an interaction with a male. 8% of women are also infected either my drug injection or by other means.
Of the adolescent women infected statewide, 18% of those women live in the Broward area. This area is the second greatest area impacted in Florida, falling only behind Miami-Dade County. ย There is a possible correlation between poverty and those impacted by STIโs. African Americans and females make up the largest portion of those living below poverty level in Deerfield.
Black individuals make up 37% of the population living below poverty level, while females account for 7.5% of the 17.7% of the total population living in poverty. The rate of women enrolled in female health services is also greater among non-black women (6,438) than it is among black women (902). While women had a higher graduation rate than men (180 women and 31 men), there were 108 more times a Caucasian graduate than there were non-Hispanic blacks.
At an Elementary school level, there doesnโt seem to be any direct correlation between education and STDโs or HIV/AIDS. For example, the ethnic minority makes up for 78% at Deerfield High School and the graduation rate is 85%. However, there could be a correlation between the fact that 69% of those students are at an economic disadvantage and their college readiness index is low.
One of the nearest locations for HIV testing is Quest Diagnostics in Deerfield Beach. They offer online appointment booking and take a variety of insurances including Aetna, Cigna and Medicaid. The education system might continue to struggle with how to present accurate information about sexual health, but places have been created at which individuals can learn about sexual health, but places have been created at which individuals can learn about sexual health care and what to do if the contract an STI or become HIV positive. For example, Planned Parenthood offers good resources and support for those struggling with STIโs. Though the closest Planned Parenthood is located a few miles away, it still is a good resource for treatment. Finally, it is encouraged that if you believe you might have an STI, you seek out testing and treatment. For more information treatment please consider the following.
