This primarily residential area often falls off the grid when it comes to their health rankings. Thrown in with the county’s, some residents might feel that their census-designated neighborhood is safe from the problems of the “big cities”. This is not true. You live and work in Miami-Dade, and this means that their problems affect you. The overall health ratings are not good, and this also pertains to the ones for STDs.
There are two things you need to know before going in. You can show up unannounced for HIV and Hep C testing, but appointments are needed if you want to be screened for syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia. All tests are free, no matter what virus or infection you want to be checked for.
Latinos Salud does provide free screenings for HIV and a few other sexually transmitted infections. Rapid tests for Hep C and HIV are here, but other results will take a few days to come back. Along with partnering with Ryan White Case Management, they also have events for clients that are designed to help educate and strengthen the gay Latino Community.

A well-known advocate for sexual health, you can rest assured that you will be in good hands. Do call ahead, they are busy and won’t take anyone that doesn’t have a prior appointment. Since they do provide a multitude of services, you can remain anonymous about the reason you are there. The only downside is that you might still run into someone you know.
Miami-Dade health department has screenings for all types of STDs. Located in West Perrine, you will want to double check times and fees. Since it is managed by the county fees can be reduced or waived, just bring the necessary paperwork with you when you show up. They will not just take your word that you are unable to pay. They also go out into the field, and you might be able to find a mobile STI testing station near you. Locations vary where they set up, and it is only at certain times of the year so you will have to plan ahead.
Jackson Health System requires you to live in the county, but they will evaluate your finances to determine how much your appointment will cost. Proof of income and residency will be required, but they may have a shorter wait than the county health clinics. You can find them on SW 62nd Ave. If that is too far than head to SW 8th St and you’ll find Borinquen Medical Centers of Miami-Dade. The only downside is that they might not allow you to pay a reduced fee, regardless of your income.
HIV is the precursor to AIDS and both are frightening viruses. Even though your county has one of the highest infection rates, you don’t have to be one of those listed in the statistics. Anytime you get a STI checkup, ask about an HIV screening. Most facilities will be more than happy to oblige.

This community organization has rapid HIV blood tests so you’ll get results in minutes instead of days. Payment can be arranged if you have difficulty paying, and this does draw in daily crowds. You can offset some of the wait by scheduling an appointment, but this does not guarantee that you still won’t have to sit in the reception room.
The only time walk-ins can get tested at Community Health of South Florida Inc., is for HIV. They do have rapid testing, and sometimes it can be free if you have the proper documentation. Since every other service requires an appointment you can expect crowds. You will also want to arrive early to secure a parking spot and your place in line.
If this all seems to be a hassle, try a private HIV/STI clinic. There are several around, and you are guaranteed not to wait. Discretion is their goal, along with giving results before you are out the door.
Information on sexual health isn’t lacking, it can just be a little harder to find. Since parents must agree that their child can take a sex ed class in school, kids often don’t get to participate. It’s not always anyone’s fault, it can be hard to get a permission slip home for a class and get it back to school.
