Communities in DeSoto County, including Olive Branch, Mississippi, are not immune to the growing STD crisis. In fact, state health reports show that rates for STDs, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are on the rise in Olive Branch.
While STD rates in the county have risen steadily since 2014, state records show a significant increase in STD rates from 2016 to 2018. Chlamydia rates jumped by 16 percent, whereas gonorrhea rates spiked by more than 40 percent.
It was newly reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis rates, however, that showed the most startling increase, as the number of newly reported cases rose from 10 cases in 2016 to 26 cases in 2018.
Mississippi Surveillance Reports showed a surprising surge in newly diagnosed HIV cases. While there was a slight decline in newly reported cases from 2016 to 2017, this decrease was diminished by a nearly 100% increase in new HIV cases from 2017 to 2018.
