Mississippi has some of the highest STD rates in the country, and health officials are worried. Medical professionals at Ole Miss say that the student population accounts for many of the STD cases in Oxford, and they say that a lack of sex education is a big factor, as is mixing alcohol or drugs with sex, which results in bad choices.
Women 24 years old and younger make up about half of the chlamydia cases in Mississippi. Chlamydia is asymptomatic in its early stages, but can cause infertility if left undetected and untreated. That’s why it’s so important for sexually active people to be tested regularly, even if they are not experiencing any symptoms.

The rising number of various STD cases that are reported each year is an alarming issue. However, the community has done its fair share of providing resources and tools for those who are interested in the topic.
For example, within the public education system, sexual health, safe sex practices, and STD awareness are all topics that are covered. Further, community members can educate themselves using the Internet and reading through the number of websites provided by the community and government.
However when the state released its 2010 STD and HIV epidemic report, an alarming trend became quite visible. What stood out the most was the astronomical amount of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases that were reported for individuals between the ages of 15 and 29. This age group reported significantly higher STD incidences consistently throughout this five-year timeframe.
There are a number of options that the community is considering including educating students within the public education system at an earlier age, pushing a strong marketing campaign that will raise awareness for this issue, speaking with parents to explain the severity of the issue, and even promote awareness throughout the campuses within the state.
The city is rich in culture and diversity, something the community prides itself on. The city is welcoming to all ethnicities, ages, heritages, and personalities, making it a great location to settle down.
When taking a closer look at the number of sexually transmitted disease cases within the state, a disproportionate disadvantage by race was discovered. According to the report, those who are considered white had the lowest risk of contracting chlamydia within the state. However, Hispanics were slightly more at risk, while African-Americans remained significantly more at risk for contracting chlamydia.
The report also broke down the number of committee cases by sex. Surprisingly, females were at a significantly higher risk of contracting chlamydia than males. For example, in 2010, the rate for males contracting chlamydia was 5,037 while females had a rate of 14,599, significantly higher.
More could be done in the city for those who are most at risk for STDs. The most at risk individuals are African American females between the ages of 15 and 29. The community believes that increasing awareness, knowledge for available public resources (such as free STD testing clinics), and safe sex practices are key to reducing the annual rate of STD reports.
The city does offer a number resources to educate its community members and provide awareness for their sexual health, but not everyone takes advantage of these things.
