In 2016 there were 12,683 cases of Chlamydia in Miami-Dade County per 100,000 people, and 3,064 cases of Gonorrhea people per 100,000 people.
There were also 1,270 cases of HIV reported in 2016 in Miami-Dade County. Overall, the state of Florida reported almost double the national average rate of new HIV cases.
Most of these new STD cases – two out of three, in fact – are diagnosed in persons 25 or younger. It’s estimated that a teenager is infected with an STD every 8 seconds. To help combat this, there are resources available for teens throughout the state.

Care Resource is a family medical center that also has a STD clinic where you can go for testing. If treatment is necessary, you might have to go next door to their main health center.

According to a 2014 article rates for both chlamydia and gonorrhea have doubled since 2006. While statistics show gonorrhea is on the decline in Miami, chlamydia has reached new heights with a record 77,851 cases reported in 2012. Of those cases, more than 55,000 were reported by women making it a serious health concern for the city.
Another concern is the age of many people who are infected with these three STDs. Since 2003, the number of cases reported by those over the age of 55 has raised red flags among healthcare professionals who work with the elderly. While Miami clearly has an issue with the spread of STDs citywide, the Health department has taken a proactive approach to education and testing. The Florida Department of Health offers STD testing options through low-cost and free STD clinics throughout the city.
