What are the STI test options in Northbrook,IL?

The beautiful Village of Northbrook, IL is a suburb of Chicago located on the northern edge of Cook County.  It is important for Northbrook residents to pay attention to their health because sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise all across Cook County.

STD rates in Cook County continue to be well about the targets set by the national Healthy People 2020 initiative. For example, the target for syphilis among males was 6.8 per 100,000 people. In 2016, the rate for Cook County was at 15.3 for 100,000 people.

Targets for other STDs were not any better and Cook County is far from meeting targets that have been set. This represents a serious health risk for people in the Village of Northbrook.

New chlamydia rates grew 38% between 2007 and 2016. Getting tested is the only way to curb this disease in the future.

In an attempt to curb rising rates of STD’s, the Cook County Public Health Department has established several clinics that may offer free STD testing in the area. Some of these include Family Services of Glencoe and Family Services of Winnetka-Northfield.

Access Community Health Network, and the Erie Evanston/Skokie Health Center all offer testing services for many types of STDs. Abdallah Karam Internal Medicine and the Howard Brown Health Center are other options for certain populations.

Sometimes, testing at public clinics are not always available at times that are convenient. If you test positive, prescriptions may not be available through the facility and a physician might not be available for consultation at all public facilities.

Your trusted source for comprehensive and unbiased STD testing locations, statistics, and resources. Backed by board-certified physicians and aligned with CDC guidelines, we're committed to providing accurate, up-to-date information to empower your health choices.

What STD tests do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC) recommends screening for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, herpes 1, herpes 2, and HIV for both men and women. In addition, the CDC suggests women get screened for trichomoniasis.

SaferSTD recommends searching for locations that offer a 10-test panel which tests for the most common bacteria and viral STDs in the U.S. with additional premium add-ons like early HIV detection, if needed.

When should I get tested?

The CDC2ย provides detailed STD testing information as to when you should get tested. In summary, you should get tested today if you are sexually active, never been tested before, have had unprotected sex in the past, or if you exhibit symptoms.ย

According to the World Health Organization3, the majority of STI cases reported every day, more than one million, are asymptomatic; another reason to get tested today.

You should get tested again in 90 days to rule out STDs that have specific exposure waiting times, including HIV.

How are STD tests done?

STD testing can be a quick and simple process, depending on the type of test you choose and where you get tested. Some may require an oral or genital swab, a urine test or blood sample, or a physical exam to check your genital area for signs of an STD.

SaferSTD has identified preferred providers that require only a urine test, a blood sample, or both without a physical exam.

How fast do I get my results?

The speed at which you receive your STD testing results depends on where you get tested. Before you choose your location, find out how long testing results will take.ย

At-home STD testing results are usually 3-5 business days, depending on the manufacturer of your test. You also need to take into account the amount of time it takes to receive the test or pick one up, perform the test, and ship it back, before the lab can analyze your results and report back to you.ย

If you test at a public facility such as a neighborhood clinic, you may have to wait a week, if not more for the results, which could delay treatment. If you test through a private facility, they have the fastest turnaround within 1-3 business days.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified the most accredited and most reputable testing locations. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

What same-day testing locations are available in Northbrook, IL?

Some STD testing clinics offer same-day walk-in options without an appointment. Below are nearby preferred locations that offer this option.

How much will STD testing cost in Northbrook, IL?

The cost of STD testing depends on whether you select private, public, or at-home testing, as well as the type of test(s) you need.

Several at-home STD options and public testing locations can cost up to $250, with most on the higher end, depending on the brand and type of testing. Public testing fees also vary based on income and welfare eligibility.ย

With private testing, you may save money on a low-cost comprehensive 10-test panel that tests for the most common bacterial and viral STDs in the United States.ย

SaferSTD has researched and identified reputable locations that offer upfront pricing without hidden fees. Click here to find a preferred location near you.

Sexual Health Education

STD Testing and Sexual Health Education in Northbrook, IL

Within the local system, students are facing the same issue as in other schools across the country. However, educators in Illinois seem to be more determined to teach medically sound facts than those in some other states. In August of 2013, Bill HB 2675 was passed. This piece of legislation prohibits abstinence only education within public schools. If schools decide to not include comprehensive information they can choose to not have a sexual education course at all.

The closest Planned Parenthood, which is located at the Rogers Health Center in Chicago offers educational resources to patients. They also provide condoms. This center is located about 40 minutes from Northbrook.

The Cook County Department of Public Health has an in depth online data bank. This site is filled with resources and information pertaining to STIโ€™s and HIV / AIDS. The site also includes external publications and a clinic locator for residents.

17 minutes south of Northbrook is the McLennan Center for Youth in Glenview. This center provides for both youth and educators alike. They also offer several programs that promote healthy sexual health. These include the SHARE (Sexual Health and Relationship Education) and The Brave Circle Project which promotes healthy peer relationships

There is also the Association for Womenโ€™s Health Care located directly in Northbrook. This center provides 24-hour care to women including HPV testing, counseling services and emergency procedures. They also have a center in Chicago.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Demographics in Northbrook, IL

Males seem to be more impacted by STIโ€™s and HIV / AIDS than females. In 2014 there were 950 male cases reported in Cook County. Female cases were fewer by more than half. Males also had a lower graduation rate in comparison to females. In 2015, there were 63,222 male graduates as opposed to 89,973 female graduates in both counties combined.

Additionally, Black, non-Hispanics also had a lower graduation rate, falling below White, non-Hispanics and Latinos. In 2015, there were 77,048 White, non-Hispanic graduates, 21,948 Latino graduates, and 21,442 Black, non-Hispanic graduates. The Black, non-Hispanic graduation rate was only 14.9% in comparison to the White, non-Hispanic rate which was 53.5%. This low graduation rate could possibly correlate with the high amount of Black, non-Hispanic males infected with STIโ€™s and HIV / AIDS.

In contrast to some other areas within the Unites States, there did not seem to be a correlation between ethnicity / poverty and the HIV rate. For example, White, non-Hispanics make up the greatest demographic of those living below the poverty level. However, there are 6.4 times more Black, non-Hispanic males within the state living with a disease and 18.7 more Black, non-Hispanic females.

There could also be a correlation between the number of Chlamydia cases reported and the fact that White, non-Hispanics make up the greatest number of individuals living below poverty level. In 2012, 832 cases of Chlamydia were reported in relation to White, Non-Hispanics. This ethnic demographic had 713 individuals living below the poverty level.

This Planned Parenthood accepts a wide variety of insurances- all of which are listed on their website. Insurances accepted include Medicaid. Individuals who are aged 19-26 who have no health insurance and meet certain criteria can qualify for Gardasil at no extra charge.

This location tests for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia using urine samples. Most of their STI tests also require a genital exam. Rapid HIV testing can be done by swabbing the inside of the patientโ€™s mouth and with results in as little as 10 minutes. They offer counseling for those whose tests come back positive.

ARCPoint Labs in Elk Grove Village has testing facilities and is about a 30-minute drive from Northbrook. They offer onsite and mobile testing as well as call ahead appointments. Aside from testing for individual STIโ€™s, they have two comprehensive panel packages.

One is the basic STD profile which includes Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, STD profile, Hepatitis A Antigen, Syphilis, Hepatitis B Core Antibody, HIV ยฝ Antibody, Hepatitis C Antibody, and Herpes Type 2.
